Thanksgiving - A Time For Thanks and A Time For Help

By Claudia McCants

With November just around the corner, we’ll all be busy planning our Thanksgiving menus soon since that day is the one holiday most families reserve for celebrating together. More than likely—since most of our readers are foodies and travelers—you’ll be preparing dinner or traveling to visit relatives for a Thanksgiving feast.

This year, with the economy pinching at our pockets and clasping our wallets a little tighter, money may be presenting a problem. Some of us are out of work and others are underemployed and getting paid far less than they were in the past. Many families have expanded, and I’m not talking about new babies joining the brood. I’m referring to older children moving back in with their parents, or grandparents moving in with their grown adult kids. Even with our budgets painfully squeezed, we still want to continue our Thanksgiving traditions, and part of that tradition is sitting around the table together to give thanks to God for our blessings.

Last November, I wrote an article called “Discounted Groceries In Lean Times,” a story featuring information about Angel Food Ministries and SHARE FLORIDA, two food programs that offer deeply discounted food to those in need. Typically, we think of “those in need” as “other people”, but things have changed drastically in the past two years and many of us need a little help…especially with groceries. Both organizations offer food packages to ANYONE—there are no income requirements, no qualifications, no minimums or applications.

Angel Food Ministries is offering the following Thanksgiving package for just $36—but time is of the essence. The last day you can order this holiday box is October 28th.

  • 7 lb. (avg.) Perdue Roaster
  • 2.5 lb. Boneless Netted Ham
  • 2 lb. Frozen Diced Sweet Potatoes
  • 3.5 lb. (avg.) Frozen Corn Cobbett’s (12)
  • 2 lb. Frozen Green Beans
  • 1 lb. Frozen Cranberries
  • 17 oz. Ready to Cook Corn Bread Dressing
  • 4.5 oz. Brown Gravy Mix
  • 8 ct. Heat and Serve Large Dinner Roll
  • 1 Dessert Item (Pie or Cake)

The holiday package is in addition to the normal November offerings.

SHARE FLORIDA also offers a similar Thanksgiving package for just $27.50. You can locate their distribution sites on their web page. Contact your local “host” for deadline and delivery times.

Both organizations welcome volunteers and monetary contributions to help in their efforts.
